Going out there

In all these years that I am professionally dealing with online communities, I've never been to any new media targeted event, so it is about time...
Tomorrow I'll be joining Bill Johnston and others for the Online Community Unconference East 2008 in New York City. My hopes and goals are to connect with as many like-minded people as possible and to exchange thoughts and ideas. Ideally even getting some fresh takes on things. Tomorrow evening I'll know more and for now I can prepare myself and expect THE BEST!

Not exactly my first blog ever

The idea to create a topic specific blog, a career oriented one even, came from a truly nice and helpful colleague. Thanks for suggesting it Frank!

I realized that I've been blogging about personal stuff maybe all my life - ages ago on paper, now online - but would have yet to do so for the stuff I've been dealing with for more than 12 years: the world wide web and all it's new(er) applications.

I remember exactly how thrilled I was when I first received an email from somebody in Scotland, while I was sitting in my Munich office. I don't recall what this email was about but I remember vividly that it triggered my desire to know more about how this technology works and ultimately let me to write a book about Netscape. This was back in 1996.

Fast forward 8 years, I find myself in New York City and landing a job as Director Member Services at Fotolog now one of the worlds leading social networking sites. I am still with Fotolog and I am still taking care of all customer service and membership development related issues.

When I started, the Fotolog Community had less than 400,000 members and is approaching 15 million by mid February 2008. I've learned a lot over the years - not just with Fotolog but also the prior (social networking) companies I've worked for - and will share some of that experience and thoughts.

Stay tuned...
